Native macOS writing assistant

Privacy-first, open-source English rewriting.

Rewritr helps non-native English speakers turn selected text into smoother, more natural, native-like English, right where they write.

No hosted Rewritr account. No rewrite history. No analytics. Bring your own OpenAI-compatible provider, or point it at a local model.

Rewritr comes from Rewriter. The missing letter e keeps the name small, light, and a little playful, just like the app itself.

Privacy first

Your text stays under your control.

Rewritr is intentionally small. It does not run a backend, collect analytics, store rewrite history, or ask you to create an account.

No Rewritr backend

Only selected text is sent

The app sends the text you explicitly select only to the provider endpoint you configure.

Bring your own key

You choose the provider

Use an OpenAI-compatible cloud endpoint, or use a local model when you want data to stay inside your own machine or network.

macOS Keychain

API keys stay on your Mac

Provider keys are stored in Keychain. Non-sensitive settings stay in local app preferences.

Open source

Inspect what it does

Rewritr is free and open source, so the trust model is visible instead of hidden behind a hosted writing service.

Purpose

Better everyday English, not a new writing platform.

Rewritr is for people who already know what they want to say, but want the final English to feel smoother and more natural.

It is not trying to be a document editor, AI content generator, academic writing suite, browser extension, or subscription writing account.

01

Select text

Highlight the sentence or paragraph you want to improve in the app you are already using.

02

Trigger Rewritr

Use the global shortcut from the macOS menu bar app. Rewritr copies the selection through normal macOS automation.

03

Preview or replace

Review the rewrite first, or use instant replacement when you want the fastest flow.

Different by design

A narrower tool with fewer hidden tradeoffs.

Not browser-bound

Works across normal macOS apps and browser text fields that support standard copy and paste.

Not account-centric

No Rewritr login, hosted workspace, usage dashboard, or server-side rewrite history.

Not a paywalled AI suite

The app focuses on one job: rewrite selected English naturally using a provider you control.

Not over-formal

The default rewrite aims for clear, native-like everyday English, not academic or thesis-style prose.

Screenshots

Setup should feel understandable, not mysterious.

Provider and behavior

You decide where rewriting happens.

Configure a full OpenAI-compatible endpoint, model, optional API key, rewrite mode, and shortcut in one place.

Privacy is visible The app states what stays local, what is sent, and what it does not collect.

Compatibility

Works best with normal editable text.

Rewritr works best in apps and browser fields that support standard selection, ⌘-C, and ⌘-V.

Secure fields, terminals, remote desktops, virtual machines, browser-based IDEs, and apps with unusual focus handling may be limited.

Free and open source

Try Rewritr, or inspect the source first.
